The American Cancer Society has been around since 1913, but River Dell High School started their version of this club this year. This club’s purpose is to spread awareness for those with cancer.
So far The ACS has a couple things planned such as the “Relay for Life”, toy drives, and themed charity walks. These activities are not only to contribute to this cause, but also to create a community for those with cancer.
Sophie Gang, the club’s president, said over email that, “This club aims to raise awareness about cancer, provide support to those affected by the disease, and contribute to fundraising efforts for cancer research.”
The club will also organize educational workshops. These workshops will bring people together to learn, collaborate, and solve problems with the ultimate goal in spreading awareness. As Gang said, “The main goal is to raise awareness about cancer.”
Approximately 40.5% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes. This really shows just how many people are in a place where someone in their family is struggling with this disease and might need a support system.
Gang explained that “We are going to join/host events such as charity walks, virtual webinars with survivors or cancer researchers, hold fundraisers, and donate to our community.”
Since this club is so new the only leaders are Sophie Gang, as President and Emma Palomarin, as Vice President. Mr. Tota, the faculty advisor, said “Sophie Gang led the charge to start this club.”
The reason Sophie wanted to start this club was because someone she was close to passed away from cancer. Witnessing the young boy’s resilient and courageous battle with cancer was a heartbreaking experience that deeply moved her. There are so many people with stories like this and this club will be a safe space for anyone.
With seventy students signing up for the club has an exciting year ahead of them and the leaders hope that by creating this club they can raise awareness about cancer, provide support to those affected by the disease, and contribute to fundraising efforts for cancer research.
