Mrs. Smith is an aide at River Dell High School and a former student graduated as a member of the class of 2013 and won the President’s Award for Educational Excellence which is given to those of the senior class graduating within the top 10% academically. Coming out of high school, Mrs. Smith attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. She majored in sociology and criminal justice and interned with the Prosecutor’s Office. After dealing with some health concerns, she realized a career change was needed. Mrs. Smith’s sister, who is a teacher, recommended she look into becoming a substitute teacher since she was already a tutor.
Did you teach elsewhere before coming to River Dell and if so, where?
I did not teach elsewhere before coming to River Dell. I started out as a substitute teacher at the middle school and then there was an opening at the high school for a leave replacement aide position. Once the leave replacement ended, the high school created an aide position for me to stay.
How many years have you taught at River Dell?
I have been an aide at River Dell for 7 years now starting in the year 2018.
How did you feel before your first day?
I was nervous on my first day because I was coming in mid-year, and the students already had their routines and now some stranger is in the room trying to help them. Once we got into the groove of things, everything was great.
What was the most unique experience of your time at River Dell?
My first four years of River Dell, I was a 1:1 with a specific student. She and I had the most special relationship, along with her classmates. It is a rarity that a staff member is able to consistently have the same kids for several years. And while I was a substitute at the middle school, this grade of students was in 7th grade, so I actually got to be with them for 6 years. Being able to experience prom and graduation alongside them was something I will cherish forever.
What is some advice for students at River Dell High School looking to get into teaching?
Don’t forget where you came from. River Dell is a very special district where you can reach out and seek advice or help whenever you need. So, if you find yourself struggling or unsure, email an old teacher or call an administrator because we will always help each other. Also, give yourself some grace. I found that I was being very hard on myself if I couldn’t accomplish a certain task during the day or a student wasn’t understanding the material I was trying to teach. Things take time and don’t spread yourself too thin.
What is something you want people to take away from your life story?
Honestly, that is it okay if things don’t turn out the way you planned. I was dead set on my major in college and my career revolving criminology and helping victims, but once I got sick my senior year of college, everything got turned upside down. It was very hard to accept that what I had wanted out of life wouldn’t really be possible. Flash forward to now, I cannot imagine my life not working at River Dell and getting to know these incredible kids and making lifelong friends. So, it might be cliché, but everything happens for a reason, within reason, so roll with it because you will never know the amazing things that can come your way.
Mrs. Smith’s life serves as an example of being ready to adapt to challenges in your life no matter what life throws at you.
