Teen PEP is one of River Dell’s most impactful electives, giving students the chance to become peer leaders while learning how to talk about real-life issues. The program, run by the Center for Supportive Schools (CSS), focuses on sexual health education, healthy relationships, and personal development.
According to Teen PEP advisor Mrs. Lauterback, the goal of the program is to empower students to help one another. “Teen PEP gives students the knowledge and confidence to make healthy choices and to support their peers when they need guidance,” she said.
In the class, students learn about topics such as pregnancy and STI prevention, contraception, decision-making, and refusal skills. Teen PEP also addresses dating violence prevention, sexual assault awareness, and how to recognize unhealthy relationships. Along with these topics, students build leadership skills, self-esteem, and teamwork.
What makes Teen PEP stand out is its peer-led approach. Seniors learn the material in class and then lead workshops for younger students during Peer Leadership time. “It’s more relatable and easier to talk to someone closer to your own age,” Mrs. Lauterback explained. “Teen PEP shows students that tough conversations don’t have to be embarrassing.”
Teen PEP students gain valuable skills like communication, public speaking, and problem-solving, while also learning how to be responsible leaders. Applications for the program open in early spring, and students are selected through both group and individual interviews.
The program is part of a statewide Teen PEP network across New Jersey. At River Dell, students meet monthly, participate in team-building activities like Field Day, and collaborate with peers from other schools. One student, Ailee Na, was selected to represent River Dell at the state level this year.
Mrs. Lauterback believes Teen PEP benefits students long after the class ends. “Students leave Teen PEP more knowledgeable, more sensitive to differences, and more confident in making the right choices for their health,” she said.
Overall, Teen PEP is more than just an elective—it’s a program that helps students grow into confident leaders who are ready to support those around them.
