RDHS recently welcomed Dr. Steven Zhou, an anesthesiologist at Holy Name Medical Center, who visited students from the Future Doctors & Nurses Club and the Human Anatomy & Physiology class. This visit offered students the special opportunity to meet and ask questions to a working medical professional and gain insight into the field of anesthesiology.
Dr. Zhou shared his journey in the medical field. He earned his medical degree at Penn State College of Medicine, completed his anesthesiology residency at Ohio State University College of Medicine, and a fellowship in pain medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.
He shared important information about his years in school in order to become an anesthesiologist, including how he used flashcards to study for the MCAT and how pre-med programs evaluate students.
Students were especially interested in the stories Dr. Zhou shared—like when someone punctured an artery while performing surgery and blood was coming out everywhere. Dr. Zhou had to get rid of his blood-soaked shoes.
The Future Doctors & Nurses Club “gives students a vital edge by offering firsthand insights into the vast world of healthcare. Hearing directly from professionals goes beyond textbook learning, providing clarity on career goals by detailing the specific educational path, the day-to-day workload, and the realities of work-life balance,” said Mrs. Carcich, the club’s advisor and Human Anatomy & Physiology teacher.
Visits like these continue throughout the school year as the club brings in guest speakers from diverse healthcare backgrounds, including medical school students, professionals, and specialists. The next speaker is an Operating Room (OR) nurse who is scheduled to visit on December 18th, from 9 a.m.–10 a.m.
