As the weather changes, head coach of the Girl’s Basketball team, Lindsay Steffner, preps for the season, excited to see what’s in store for the team.
The senior captains for the 2025 season are Senior Kasey Ziegler, and 1st Team All-County winner Morgan Sconza. In the history of River Dell only twelve girls have received 1st Team All- County honors. Coach Seffner received the award in 1996-1997 and1997-1998. While Sconza was the latest hawk to do so, earning the award last year.
Sconza said, “To prepare for the season we are making sure we have everything ready to communicate with the underclassmen. This is a big role, and I want to make sure everyone is ready to make a run this season.”
This is Kasey’s 4th year as a returning varsity player. Although, there are a handful of other returning players this season, Ziegler said, “In the starting lineup, we have four returning players that include Morgan Sconza, Alexa Depol, Dalia Interiano, and myself. We also have some strong returning players fighting for the final spot, but I am confident with anyone who joins the starting five.”
The official kick off of the season is December 19th at Dumont.
To prepare the girls had 3 days of tryouts that started on November 25th and a recent scrimmage on the 9th of December.
Many of the girls are excited about this season to start and are confident in their team this season. Returning sophomore, Dalia Interiano, said, “I feel our team is going to be strong this year. I feel ready and our energy is high which is something we need in order to do well this season.”
“We had a good team last year, and the fact that we are only losing one starter, makes me feel very hopeful. We have a great team with a wide range of strengths, so I am excited to see our chemistry on the court,” said Ziegler.
The Girls’ record last year was 17-8 in the regular season. One of the biggest upsets of their season last year was the loss to Mahwah 47-39. When asked about this loss Zigler sates, “We broke our streak last season with a hard loss to Mahwah, but we are ready to work hard to secure the league title this year.”
With the season right around the conner, the captains where asked what they were most excited about this season Sconza reported, “I have to say I’m most excited to open up at home again PV. It’s always a battle and anytime someone walks into your gym you want to some them who’s boss.”
