River Dell High School’s Interact Club is participating in the county-wide Week of Service, “United We Serve.” But what exactly is this event? United We Serve Bergen celebrates the 250th anniversary of America and allows students to gain volunteer hours while focusing on and improving community needs.
Through this initiative, Bergen County encourages residents and businesses to volunteer with organizations and host community-based projects that support veterans and seniors. The Week of Service is designed to be flexible so it can meet a wide range of interests and schedules.
“United We Serve is about turning commemoration into action,” said Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Zur. “It’s about reconnecting with our neighbors and doubling down to support each other. As we remember that this began with ‘We the People,’ there’s no better way to honor our past than by securing our future.”
“This event is being done in honor of America’s 250th birthday by getting everyone involved in community service,” said Ms. Salgachik, the teacher advisor of the Interact Club. The event offers Bergen County residents the chance to take part in service projects that address community needs.
During the Week of Service, Interact Club officers are stationed in the cafeteria and commons during both lunch periods, where students can color bookmarks and placemats. These items are laminated and distributed to those in need. The placemats are included in Meals on Wheels deliveries, while the bookmarks are shared through backpack drives and Project Literacy in the fall. High school students also have the opportunity to write letters or cards to those serving in the military.
“Bergen County has always stepped up when it matters most,” noted County Executive James J. Tedesco III. “As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, United We Serve is an opportunity to bring people together, give back to our communities, and put the values we’re celebrating into action. This is about service, community, and making sure every resident has a chance to be part of this milestone.”
People can also host projects such as outdoor environmental cleanups and collection drives to support veterans, seniors, and other organizations. If you would like to volunteer outside of River Dell, you can visit https://www.unitedweservebergen.org/ to sign up.
