An adventure like no other waits for a group of 19 River Dell students as they will venture into the frozen tundra of Iceland from February 12th through the 17th. The trip being hosted by Mr. Drywa with the help of the ACIS travel group that specializes in taking students on memorable trips across the world.
While in Iceland students are set to learn about the Vikings who once roamed as well as explore the capital city of Reykjavík, hike through beautiful glaciers, see waterfalls, and go to geothermic hot springs. The students will also have the chance to try some of the cleanest and freshest water on the planet, according to Drywa.
Senior Nate Silverstein admitted “The black sand beaches and hikes through frozen glaciers sound incredible,” said senior Nate Silverstein who is eagerly awaiting the trip.
Seniors and juniors alike are hopeful to see the northern lights, but the weather is always unpredictable.
Chaperones Mr. Drywa and Mr. Poling have told the students to “be prepared for anything.” The weather is so unpredictable it’s hard to gauge if they see the aurora borealis, but the students remain hopeful.
Besides nature’s light show, the weather will be cold, and possible snowstorms can change plans as well. Students are instructed that layering is key to being warm and having fun and that dressing to be fashionable can leave you cold and miserable. On top of these advisements, students have been told to make sure they have outlet adapters as well as international data if they needed it.
Junior Ashton Aller can’t wait to leave. “I am excited to go on the hikes and explore the Icelandic geography especially the frozen glaciers. The water also sounds amazing!”
Students may be excited about the trip, but the redeye is one-part students are dreading. Taking off from 7pm from Newark and landing at 5 am in Iceland with a five-hour time difference is going to set the tone early for the whirlwind trip. Poling and Drywa advised sleeping on the plane due to hitting the ground running come landing in Iceland.
Slated to have a great trip, everyone is excited and can’t wait to be in another nation. Iceland has beauty and water like nowhere else on Earth and Mr. Drywa and Poling are confident it will be an amazing trip and that everyone will learn a lot.
