On Wednesday, January 3, 2024, Ms. Carcich took both of her Anatomy classes on their first field trip of the year. The group of students traveled down to Philadelphia to visit the Mütter Museum. The human abnormalities and deformities museum displays many wax models of diseases and specimens between fetuses to live human bodies and skeletons.
Carcich has been taking her anatomy classes to this exhibit for the past twenty years. She shared “One, I like cheesesteaks. And two, I don’t know how many kids would get the opportunity to come down to Philly and go to a human abnormalities and deformities museum, so it is something they get a chance to see,” which is why she continues this trip year after year.
The group began the trip at 7:30 a.m., taking a two-hour bus ride to the museum. They were able to walk around and explore the exhibits for about an hour and fifteen minutes.
Talking to Sr. Hailey Lisica, she explains her take on the trip, “It was very cool to witness all of the live preserved organs and deformities.” That’s right, live, most of the exhibits on display were real skulls, organs, and even fetuses in liquid jars to stop them from decaying. Lisica mentioned how her favorite part was seeing the conserved fetuses at different ages, 10 weeks, 20 weeks, etc.
Not only were there just skulls, but full body skeletons as well, including a 7’6 male standing next to a 3’6 adult, both who’s skeletons were donated to the museum once deceased.
After, they took a pit stop at Pat and Gino’s cheesesteaks for lunch to take the two-hour journey back to River Dell.
Overall, the trip was a success. Students that attended the trip said it was very fun and allowed them to see a lot of cool and interesting things that they would not be able to see anywhere else. Lisica also adds how this expierience got her more interested is pursuing her passion to go into the medical field.
