Coach Baranello, seen here coaching during a previous season, owns a Great Dane who is actually bigger than some of his wrestlers.

Wednesday night, January 3rd, the upper gym, was filled with River Dell students, parents, and buzz as the River Dell’s wrestling team versed the Broncos of Pascack Hills.

Under the roar of the home crowd, the Hawks soared to a victory on their own turf, seizing triumph in a match that echoed with their prowess.

Before the match, Coach Baranello shared, “Pascack Hills, they’re a very good, well-coached program. The flip coin is going to be important. If we win, we can determine the matches. Tonight, 165, 175, and 190 weight class matches are key.” As anticipated, these matches were the linchpins of the Hawk’s win.

Surprisingly, Hills forfeited eight of the 14 matchups which allowed RD to run up the score 52-25.

Senior, Owen Windram in the 175-weight class prevailed over his opponent. He secured back points in every period.  Windram won the match with just 3 seconds to spare in the 3rd period. His success reflected his determination and strength and carried the overall score to 18-9.

Representing the 190 weight class, Jack Courrain was to follow. With a swift triumph in the second period, Courrain pinned his opponent in a mere 3 minutes and 7 seconds. The crowd erupted in ecstatic cheers as the Hawk’s score surged.

New member, Micheal Archvadze earned a win by a major decision (a win by more than 8 points). With a score of 15-5, the freshman not only showcased his skill and power.

Understandably proud of the night, The Hawks understand that future teams will have full rosters and everyone will need to be ready to defend this team’s impressive record.
