Senior Aubree Wurf received an Honorable Mention from the Scholastic Art and Writing awards according an April 9th Instagram Post associated with RD. The piece, “Teenage Life”, is a part of her current advanced placement art portfolio which is currently in the works. Her portfolio shows what it’s like to be a teenage girl in today’s world and portrays it through personal experiences.
“This one (pictured above) for example is the feeling of wanting to purge after seeing my weight on the scale.” Aubree says.
Wurf goes on to describe her AP art portfolio as “All about body image…” she continues. “Each piece covers a different feeling corresponding to a specific trigger.”
This piece isn’t the only heartbreaking one in the collection. Wurfs’ goal was to make viewers feel uncomfortable looking at the art, but also bring awareness to emotions not only she goes through but so many other girls and women throughout the world.
“Instead of creating something negative out of it, I decided to put my feelings into art.”
Other pieces in the portfolio follow the same theme of body image. One being of a skeleton in a leotard resting in fifth position. Another is showing the torso through the chest area of a malnourished female figure. These pieces perfectly connect to the awarded “Teenage Life” piece.
“I was hoping to place a little better in the contest, but a LOT of people entered, so I didn’t expect too much to begin with. Even though I didn’t get the desired silver or gold key, I’m proud that I got recognized.” Aubree shares her thoughts on the contest.
Students, staff, and parents can all see Aubree Wurfs’ and many other talented art students work on display when River Dells annual Art Expo is on display located in the art wing of the high school. The date is still yet to be determined.
