CYO basketball is back in full swing, and River Dell’s senior Brian O’Leary is the one responsible for them being on the come-up. Back from a leg injury and major knee surgery, O’Leary has been averaging 23-plus points per game.
The Saint Peter’s Panthers are largely made up of River Dell students, and Brian O’Leary is one of their star players. His work hasn’t gone unnoticed, and his skills from coaching children’s basketball and his own ability have played a large role in his recovery and his ability as a Panther playmaker.
Brian has explained, “It’s honestly a blessing to be back on the court. Knowing that God gave me another opportunity allows me to represent my church.” He has taken a lot of pride in his church and expresses it through his abilities.
He largely attributed his recovery to God, believing that through Him he has recovered. O’Leary rehabbed at Professional Physical Therapy in River Edge. “Justin was an amazing [physical therapist]. It made me really enjoy coming to PT and got me motivated to start my workouts.”
Brian has also started weightlifting again, helping him recover from the knee injury he suffered.
O’Leary has found ways to hone his skills to make him a weapon for the Panthers. On top of his ability on the offensive side, Brian is a weapon on defense, constantly blocking shots with his towering 6’0” frame and lengthy arms. He has no fear, even if most of the opponents he faces are off-season football players, stating, “Most are buff football players who are insanely strong. It does scare me sometimes, but I know I have the confidence to outperform them.”
“During my timeouts, I feel most connected with the team. I get to communicate with them on the court and recuperate our steps.” Brian has bonded with the team and has faith in them that together they’ll get the job done.
Overall, the CYO Panthers have had a great start to their season. O’Leary and company are eager to play more games and represent Saint Peter’s Church and River Dell in a positive light.
