The United States delivered one of its most memorable Olympic performances in recent history at the 2026 Winter Games in 2026 Winter Olympics, closing out the competition with strong showings across multiple sports and setting national records along the way.
Team USA finished the Winter Olympics with 12 gold medals, 12 silver medals, and 9 bronze medals, totaling 33 medals. That impressive total placed the U.S. second in the overall medal standings behind a dominant Norwegian team, which captured more medals overall.
A highlight of the Games — and perhaps one of the most thrilling moments for American fans — came in the final days of competition. In a dramatic gold medal hockey game, the U.S. men’s team defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime, capturing America’s first Olympic men’s hockey gold since the famed 1980 “Miracle on Ice.”
“It was so awesome watching our country perform so well,” said sophomore Yena Ryu.
Beyond hockey, the U.S. enjoyed success in individual events. Alysa Liu made history in figure skating, becoming the first American woman in 24 years to win an Olympic title in the sport. Several other athletes, including speed skater Jordan Stolz, freestyle stars, and alpine skiers contributed to the gold medal haul that set a new American Winter Games record.
“I loved watching Alysa Liu skate because she was just skating for fun with no care at all if she won or not,” said Sophia Tartari.
The overall Olympic run captured the public’s attention not just for the medals, but for the excitement and viewership milestones, particularly in events like hockey.
With the Games now wrapped, Team USA’s success sets a strong tone heading into future competitions, including the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in LA.
