River Dell High School is starting an exciting new chapter in athletics with the creation of its first girls flag football team. The spring 2026 season marks the inaugural season for the program, giving students the opportunity to compete in one of the fastest growing high school sports in New Jersey.
Although the team is new to River Dell, flag football itself has been growing steadily across Bergen County for the past five years. Many nearby high schools have already developed teams and competitive programs. Beginning in the spring of 2027, girls flag football will become a full-time spring sport and will be officially sanctioned by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), marking an important step in the sport’s growth and recognition.
“I think there will be a learning curve for this season,” said Coach Aliano.
With this momentum building, the River Dell athletic department decided it was the perfect time to introduce the sport to the school. The program is expected to continue for years to come as interest in girls flag football keeps expanding.
“The team will be learning all the skills necessary to compete with other teams,” said Coach Aliano.
This season, River Dell will compete against several Bergen County schools, including Dwight Morrow, Hackensack, Paramus Catholic, Ramapo, Ridgewood, Paramus, Tenafly, and Indian Hills. The team’s first game will take place on March 31st at Tenafly High School at 7 p.m., marking the beginning of a brand-new era for River Dell athletics.
“We wouldn’t have put it in place unless we thought it was something that was long-lasting. Flag football is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. We’re hoping that it advances and it grows a little each year,” said Tota, River Dell’s Athletic Director.
Many of the players are new to the sport and are working hard to learn the rules, strategies, and skills necessary to compete. Practices are focused on building fundamental football skills, teamwork, and understanding of the game.
“All the girls, including myself, are trying to learn everything that has to do with this sport,” said Coach Aliano.
More than anything, the team’s goals for the season are about growth. Players hope to learn the game, build confidence and knowledge, create a positive team culture, and improve each week. By the end of the season, success will be measured by how much the team has developed since the first practice.
