The River Dell High School varsity baseball team has enjoyed one of its most successful seasons, turning hard work and team chemistry into a year full of accomplishments. With a current record of 15-8, the team has more than doubled its win total from last season, creating excitement and optimism throughout the program.
The positive atmosphere surrounding the team has been one of the biggest reasons for its success. Players and coaches have emphasized the strong bond within the group, describing the season as both competitive and enjoyable. Their performance has also made history for the program. River Dell qualified for the county tournament for the first time in that span, marking a major step forward for the program.
“Best finish that we’ve had in the league in probably close to a decade,” said Coach Sasso.
Although the season has been fueled by teamwork, several players have received individual recognition for their outstanding performances. David Nunez earned First Team All-League honors, while Nate Silverstein, Alex Silverstein, Jayden Thomas, Mike Porco, and Michael McDonough were all selected to the Second Team All-League. Jordan Mellaci and Jayden Lyness also received Honorable Mention recognition. The long list of awards reflects the depth and talent throughout the roster.
“A lot of people didn’t think that we would be any good this year, especially with us getting a harder schedule this year. But everyone on the team did a great job of putting their heads down and working. Now we have a chance to do great things in the playoffs,” said Jayden Thomas.
Now, the team’s focus shifts toward the state tournament, where every game carries extra importance. Despite the pressure, the coaching staff is sticking to a simple but effective strategy. Preparation centers around maintaining consistent repetitions and staying active, understanding that baseball is built on muscle memory and routine.
“It’s really been very much a team effort. I want to stress that,” said Coach Sasso.
With strong leadership, team unity, and momentum on their side, River Dell enters the postseason looking to build on an already impressive season and continue making history.
